It moves from London, where magician Max Mephisto is performing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and Brighton, where DI Edgar Stephens is looking into the death of Madame Zabini, a fortune teller, on the pier.

A slightly tenuous and circumstantial set of events suggest that an “infernal device” is going to be detonated at some point during the celebrations.
